LED torches - mobile light for every application

Every well-stocked household has at least one torch. And in many professions, the mobile light source is even part of the standard equipment. The classic torch is a portable light source that is suitable for many situations. It provides light in the dark at the touch of a button. Headlamp, torch, mini torch - the mobile light source is available in numerous designs and from many brands. At MAUL, you can find a large selection of different LED torches, all of which are of high quality. Take your time to look around and be inspired.
What types of LED torches are there
The classic LED torch is the rechargeable torch. In the past, there were mainly torches with light bulbs, but this is now different. LEDs have long since become an important light source. LED is an abbreviation for the English term "Light-Emitting Diode", in German lichtemittierende Diode, Leuchtdiode or Lumineszenz-Diode. Due to the advanced technical development, light-emitting diodes are mainly used in LED torches, as they currently achieve five times the efficiency of incandescent lamps. It is therefore not surprising that the market is led by LED torches. The advantage is clear: LED torches with built-in light-emitting diodes have a longer light output and lower power consumption. Furthermore, the light colour is independent of the battery voltage and the brightness can often be adjusted over a wide range. It should be borne in mind that LED torches generally have a narrow light cone. Apart from the LED torch, however, there are other types of torch - the most important of which are briefly presented below.
LED flashlight
The rod torch is the classic LED torch. The torch is available in many different sizes and designs. It has a practical design and is particularly popular among mobile light sources. In general, the LED torch is a real all-rounder that should not be missed, especially for domestic use.
LED headlamp
The headlamp is also known colloquially as a headlamp. It is a sub-category of the torch. The LED headlamp is primarily used in the outdoor sector. Typically, hikers, joggers or climbers rely on the headlamp. It can be strapped to the head with a headband so that you have both hands free. This is an advantage for many outdoor activities. The light beam can be precisely adjusted to a specific area so that it is suitable for the intended use. The LED headlamp can also be used for screwdriving and DIY work. Thanks to a rechargeable battery, the lamps have a good runtime of many hours.
LED mini torchAs the name suggests, the LED mini torch is a smaller version of the normal torch. It is therefore significantly smaller and designed to be carried anywhere and at any time, for example as a key ring. The advantages of this LED torch therefore lie in its constant availability. Due to their design, the mini LED torches are of course not quite as powerful in terms of luminosity and burn time.
UV torchThe UV torch is a very special model that is used less in everyday life. The lamp works without visible light, but with UV light. This light source is used to detect secret UV writing, dirt or other contaminants. Preferably in the area of food hygiene. Safety goggles should always be worn when using the UV torch.
LED torches are usually powered by batteries. However, there are also lamps without batteries and rechargeable batteries - these are dynamo torches. This special torch is powered by a crank - so it works completely without electricity. However, muscle power is required to light it up. Unfortunately, the lamps do not have a particularly high luminosity. They are therefore less suitable for everyday use, but are used as an emergency torch in the event of a power cut.The advantages of LED torches at a glance
The LED torch offers you a whole range of advantages. It is therefore not surprising that it is the most popular light source among portable light sources.
What applications are there for LED torches
LED torches are now real all-rounders that can be used in many situations. Work, everyday life, hobby - there are suitable lamps for every requirement. In general, it can be said that the possible uses of torches are actually unlimited. Workshop, hobby, work, everyday life - wherever you need a bright light source quickly, you are well served with an LED torch. Even special police forces, fire brigades or rescue teams cannot do without the mobile light source. The mobile torch is also justifiably referred to as an all-rounder - because it is always and everywhere useful.
What to look out for when buying an LED torch
Buying an LED torch is not as easy as it seems at first glance. There are considerable differences in quality, particularly in terms of lighting quality. It is important to pay attention to the following features, among others, in order to obtain an LED torch with good performance:
- Visual comfort
- Visual performance
- Safety
- Luminous distance or also called range
- Luminous flux or also called lumen value
- Light duration
- Energy consumption
- Illuminance (sometimes also called luminous intensity, luminosity, luminosity or lux value)
- Colour temperature (sometimes also called light colour, Kelvin value or colour location)
- Scope of functions/equipment, such as focussability and dimmability
- Lifespan
Luminous range / luminous flux
You don't necessarily need the brightest torch in the world. However, the light range and luminous flux provide information about the performance of the torch. The vast majority of manufacturers specify the luminous flux of the light in the unit lumen ("lm"). A candle, for example, has a weaker luminosity of around 12 lumens than a fluorescent lamp, which emits around 3000 lumens at 40 watts.
The higher the lumen luminous flux, the more light the LED torch emits. However, the luminous flux only gives an indication of the total amount of light emitted by the torch at any given time. It does not provide any information about how intensively the light is emitted in one direction. A long range with a low luminous flux means that the light is strongly focussed. Conversely, a low light range with a high luminous flux indicates that the light is widely scattered. This focussing of the light can be adjusted to requirements using the focusability function.
Illuminance
The illuminance, measured in lux ("lx"), is highly dependent on the distance of the illuminated body to the LED torch. The specification of illuminance is often used, but only makes sense if the distance of the illuminated object is specified at the same time as the pure lux value. See also lumen.
Focussability and dimmability
A good LED torch should be focusable so that you can see as wide as possible at close range and still recognise details in the distance if necessary and if the light is focused. With a dimmable torch, you can also save energy and increase the burn time, as you can adjust the brightness of the torch's light to suit your needs.
RangeIf the LED torch is to be used for certain activities - such as night hikes - then the range is crucial. The range depends largely on the illuminance in the spotlight. The brighter the lux value in the lamp spot, the further the lamp can shine. It is not possible to make a generalised assessment of the ideal range; it depends on personal requirements. However, a good LED torch should reach a distance of around 200 m.
Running time
The best LED torch is useless if it stops working after just half an hour. As you can imagine, the runtime is an important criterion. At maximum brightness (maximum lumen), the torch should at least still have a certain level of luminosity after a certain period of time. In general, you should look for a minimum light duration of 1 to 2 hours and good rechargeable batteries with a long service life when buying a torch.
Housing
The housing of an LED torch is usually made of aluminium. This material is characterised by its robust properties. The torch can also be used on outdoor excursions. This is different if the LED torch is made of plastic - this should not be used outdoors.
WeightThe weight of the LED torch can be particularly relevant if you need to hold the mobile light source for long periods of time. Stable properties are essential if the torch is to be used for outdoor adventures. However, this also means that the torch is heavier, but produces more lumens and more brightness. The situation is different for everyday use, where the torch does not need to be particularly robust, which has a positive effect on the weight.
Equipment features
LED torches are available with a wide variety of features. It primarily depends on the intended use. Torches with a practical carrying strap are useful. You can then attach the torch to a belt or hang it on a hook in a tent, for example. There are also torches with different light modes (flash or SOS mode). However, different protection mechanisms and focussability can also be decisive if you need the LED torch for special applications.
